To choose the word “strange” is kind of a masterstroke since it has so many meanings that would all fit here. “We think this song not only describes the vulnerability of a stranger very well but also why most people would do almost anything to not be strange (which is kind of strange itself) which they wouldn’t if being strange wouldn’t be considered strange. The song came about in early 1967, after guitarist Robby Krieger and a depressed Morrison had walked to the top of Laurel Canyon, which was considered a nexus of counterculture activity and attitudes in the 1960s, becoming famous as home to many of LA’s rock musicians back then. The song is about alienation and being an outsider, and Jim Morrison may have addressed the song both to the hippie culture, to outsiders in general or to users of drugs such as LSD, or both. It was written by Robby Krieger and Jim Morrison although credit was given to The Doors evenly.
